traumatized

I am not sure who was more traumatized after our visit last night - Charlie or mommy and daddy. When we got there, his night nurse was adamant that Vince was going to hold Charlie. Please note, that this was not a topic that we had brought up with her at all. She had just finished checking his vitals and told Vince to go put on a yellow gown, so we just followed her lead. Unfortunately, she was not one of Charlie's regular nurses - she has only had him once or twice and has never moved him before. I am not sure what she was thinking, but the way she moved and then situated him in Vince's arms was not the way Dee has done it for me and things did not go well. He ended up extubating himself and his oxygen levels dropped right off.

So he went right back in his bed and the nurse practitioner and doctor were called right in. The good news is that he did start breathing on his own right away and had over 30 breaths a minute. He was not moving quite enough oxygen to warrant staying off the vent though and they re-intubated him. So, Vince has sworn off holding him until the vent is gone; not that I can blame him though. It was not a pleasant experience.

The only other big thing going on now are his feedings. He is doing okay. They are getting some aspirates (stuff left in his belly after is eats). They think it is a lot of spit though, so we are continuing to keep our fingers crossed that we do not run into any major feeding issues!

How scary for Vince and you! I do have a piece of advice on nurses--if you ever feel your nurse is not doing their job or you feel uncomfortable with him or her, report it to your primary nurse that you don't want that nurse working with Charlie. We did that once, for I caught a nurse not handling Ian's central line correctly (you learn so much by sitting by your son's bedside for hours) and can catch errors the nurses make.

Many prayers Charlie does well with his feeds and won't have too many issues. Hope they can continue weaning Charlie from his vent so Vince can get a proper cuddle from his son!

Hang in there, you both and Charlie are doing great!

Wow--that would be so scary! I am so glad to hear that Charlie started breathing on his own, but still!

We're avidly reading updates...and Iw as asked to pass along from a reader of our blog (Kerrie) that your guys are incredibly strong and she admires that in you both.

That sounds so scary!!! I found your blog through Sofie's. I am expecting my first on Tuesday and he has CDH. We are excited, but definately scared. We will be praying for you all.

I totally agree with Tracy.

Me being the wife of a doctor I hear quite some stories about nurses. Report her with your primary nurse so this won't happen again with other babies.

I am so sorry you had this experience! But I'm glad Charlie is doing well.

Love,
Fer

I feel bad for Vince, that should never have happen that way, only when he was ready. I'm impressed with how Charlie bounces back, he's such a tough little guy. Can't wait to be there in person and just cuddle him. Keep up the good work guys.
Love ya all, Nana & PopPop
