We're home...

We just got home from the hospital after a very extended stay. As you know, my water broke Sunday night. We were admitted late Monday morning without any obvious signs of labor. After three days of trying to get things going we finally made some progress and labor progressed throughout the day Wednesday. There was no turning back by the afternoon and labor was pretty intense from that point on thanks to the heavy doses of pitocin they had been pushing into me! It was all worth it though!

Vincent Charles D'Angelo was born at 9:52 Wednesday night with a full head of dark hair. We are calling him Charlie  in order to avoid the 2 Vince confusion - that way they know who I am yelling at! :-)  There was no crying, but he was breathing on his own before the NICU team wisked him to their work station. A breathing tube was put right in, as we expected. Deacon Nick was able to baptize him before they left our room.

They then rushed him out to the NICU where he made quite the impression, needing 5 adults to hold him down in order to prevent him from pulling out his breathing tube and other equipment. They got him settled and he had a decent first night and was able to go from 100% oxygen down to 60% by the time I was able to see him around 3 am.

Thursday was a rough day. He is having some problems with pulmonary hypertension - which we knew was a  possibility. His oxygen had to be turned back up and other medications added. A chest tube had to be put in because he perforated his left lung and the chest cavity was filling with air and fluid. It took a few tries to get the tube in properly because of the bowels being in the way, but it is working very efficiently now.

He has been doing really well yesterday and today. His oxygen is down to about 45% - although they sometimes have to tweak it up and down. He is on medicine to keep him sedated and paralyzed, but they have been letting him "wake up" a little today and he is breathing over the vent pretty regularly and his little tongue wiggles around. His nurses have been amazing and explain everything to us whenever we are there.

It was really hard to leave him today and I am tearing up again sitting here typing. But we know our little man is in the best hands possible and with everyone's prayer and positive thoughts he will be home before we know it! We have faith and we know you do too. Thank you for continuing to send him your love and strength - he needs all he can get in the coming days, weeks, and months.

Update

Just returned from the hospital. Patty and Vince are both doing well, if not a little tired.

Vincent Charles is a trooper. He even took a few breaths of his very own before having to be hooked up to some machines after he was born. It took a team of five doctors to hook him up to those machines, he was being so stubborn! The doctors at this time are looking to keep everything status quo. So far that has been the case and Vincent is doing well.

Vincent's official birth weight was 7lbs. 11oz. and he is 20 1/2 inces long. Vince was able to take some pictures of the baby, and we were trying to figure out which parent he gets his good looks from :) Hopefully we'll be able to provide those pictures by next posting and you'll be able to help us decide.

Patty and Vince continue to be greatful for everyones thoughts and prayers. Patty is scheduled to return home from the hospital on Saturday. We should expect to receive the complete update soon after. Until then, stay tuned for pictures!

Happy Birthday!

The baby formerly known as Gumdrop has finally said "Hello" to the world. His name is Vincent Charles D'Angelo, and he was born around 10:00 this evening.

No other details are currently available at this time, but will be posted as soon as they can.

Congratulations Patty and Vince, or shall I say Mom and Dad :) We are all very happy for you and your new family.

Its STILL on...

Patty and Vince have been at the hospital for more than a day now, and still no baby! Things are pretty slow going so far. The doctors have been giving Patty some medicine, in hopes to move things along a little more quickly. However, things are still moving rather slow.

Doctors come to assess how Patty is doing every 4 hours or so. Both Patty and Gumdrop (actual name to be provided later:) are doing well at this point. Patty has been experiencing some labor pains, which she has said on a scale of 0 to 5 are so far about a 2. We will keep Patty, and Vince's hands and ears, in our thoughts when they reach a 5!

Patty and Vince are thankful for all the thoughts and prayers that have been coming their way from all of their family and friends. I'm sure those thoughts and prayers will continue to come throughout the next few days and nights, and beyond. They also said that they are being well taken care of by the doctors and nurses, and are thankful for all of their help and attention.

Please hurry baby Gumdrop! Mommy is ready, and we can't wait to meet you :)

As more information comes in, I'll be sure to post it for your reading pleasure. Until then, we're still playing the waiting game. Stay tuned...

Its on...

I do not want to trump the really nice post that Vince just put up a few hours ago, but there is news. About 20 minutes after the Super Bowl ended (that we decided to watch from home by ourselves) my water broke! What makes the situation funny is that when we found out we were due in early February I joked that the baby would be born on Superbowl Sunday. As we were sitting down to watch the game with no reason to suspect that anything might happen, Vince looked over at me and said that if I could hold on just a few more hours he would be pleased. And the rest is history...

So, we are not in active labor - no contractions to speak of. We talked to the doctor and she said we could stay home for the time being and that is what we are doing. If things kick into high gear during the night, we will go up to the hospital then. If we are still status quo in the morning, I have an appointment at 9am and they will probably send us to the hospital from there.

Vince has been great so far, and all he really has to say is "Its on like Donkey Kong!" :-) For now, we are going to bed to get some rest... We have asked our good friend Jerry to keep tabs on the blog and update it for us in the coming days. Until then, keep the prayers coming!

Confessions of a Dad to Be

No news yet. We are seeing signs that things are getting ready. Patty has also been having some braxton hicks, so we feel our time has almost come. What I do have to offer is a reflection of some sorts. No news, just my thoughts before the big day...read if you wish...

As the time approaches I can’t help but offer a reflection on what goes through a father’s mind before his baby enters the world. This is normally a time that is completely focused on the mother and as well it should be. A mother can do things that a father just cannot. A mother has just spent the last nine months showing strength and courage that only a mother can muster up.

Our story is slightly different than most but at the same time it is the same as those other stories. When we first found out that we were having a baby we were ecstatic and almost didn’t believe it. We had been trying to conceive for almost two years with no luck. We were so nervous that we would go out of our way to make sure Patty did nothing strenuous in fear that we would somehow become un-pregnant. With that came all the planning, dreaming, and fun in telling others that our lives we about to change forever. Everything appeared to take on a new spin. You could instantly say “this time next year we’ll be walking the baby around” or “bringing a baby to the grocery store with you.” This appears to only be done with a first child since the ones that follow are carried with a more of a been there done that attitude. But with this being our first it seamed fit to get all wrapped up in the excitement. I have always said that it is good to get excited about stuff. It is healthy. That is why we were put here. To enjoy everything that God has given us and to truly be excited for it. What could be more precious than caring for a child, be it from birth, adoption, or even just babysitting. At first I felt guilt that I was making the baby one of the most important things in my life. I was disappointed in myself for not doing more to help others. I felt self centered and selfish. After some soul searching and praying, I realized that I was supposed to make this child my focus. My wife and family are supposed to be my world. I knew that God had chosen me to be a husband and a father, and that I can be called to help others at the same time.

When we received news about halfway into our pregnancy that our baby had a serious defect it was like someone had just punched me in the stomach. The excitement and joy that had surrounded us for the past 20 weeks had just been violently murdered. It had been replaced by intense feelings of fear which led to sadness and anger. The time between our initial diagnosis and our official visit with the area specialist was only a week but it could have been a year. It was one of the saddest weeks in my life.

I have always been a very positive person. I don’t like negativity. I don’t like focusing on all the bad things that life brings. I couldn’t help but fall into that trap. It wasn’t until we started sharing the news with others that I took ownership of it and started to turn things around. There was point where I decided that there was not going to be one more negative thought. Not one more ounce of doubt. Every part of me was going to be dedicated to positive thinking and taking care of my growing family. There was no room for fear or sadness. Sure, some days are harder than others, but from that point on there was to be no more negativity.

With that change of mind and spirit it was as if everything exciting had been let back in. Now it may sound crazy, but I could argue that having a baby born with CDH is one of the best things to ever happen to me. Regardless of the outcome, I have been changed, and I feel for the better. We will never take this baby for granted. We skipped that mode. We are already fighting for him or her. I have learned just how fast time does fly and that Gumdrop will be graduating from high school before I know if I am not careful. To let me know that she was pregnant Patty gave me a Willow Tree figurine of a pregnant woman. The name of the figure is Cherish. I have learned that you should cherish every day. You never know what is around the corner. The things in life that are really important have been made crystal clear to me. Love is so much stronger than anger and hatred, but it is sometimes much harder to spread. This journey has also brought me closer to Patty. I am convinced that we are closer because of the struggles we have gone through together.

It has also strengthened my relationship with God. I am not one to be holier than thou or push faith on others, but it has become evident just how much we need our Lord in our everyday lives. I have never prayed more or harder than I have in the past few months. It is amazing how the Lord works and I truly believe that I was intended to travel this path.

I wish everyone could go through this experience. Of course I do not wish CDH or any other disease on anyone especially a child. But I wish that everyone could have the life changing experience that I have had. I hope and pray that you take your struggles and hardships and turn then into ways to grow and triumph. Choose the power of positive thinking and love whenever you can. If you have figured this out already, I am slow and needed this to wake me up. If you have children or young people in your family, kiss them and hug them and cherish every moment. They are truly an extension of God’s love here on Earth.

Thank you again for the prayers and positive comments. We are so blessed. It won’t be long now!
